The SCCA regularly published periodicals beginning in September 1959, when Professor Robert F. Brand of the Citadel began publishing the Bulletin of the South Carolina Chess Association. Professor Brand left the state in 1965, resulting in no SCCA publications in 1966. The SCCA resumed publishing its newsletter in 1967 and continued until 1978, when the SCCA joined several neighboring states in producing a regional publication called The Chessman. When The Chessman was discontinued in mid-1980, the SCCA joined Southeast Chess for two issues for the remainder of 1980. In 1981 the SCCA resumed publishing its own newsletter under the banner "SCCA News" until 1988 when the name changed to "Palmetto Chess" and continued until its final issue in November of 1999. Below is a comprehensive collection of these publications.
Per SCCA Bulletin No. 1, the Bulletin of the South Carolina Chess Association "is intended to be primarily a news bulletin, containing items of interest to South Carolina chess players. No regular date of issue is promised." Editor: Robert F. Brand.
Per Vol. 1 No. 1 of the SCCA Newsletter, during "[a] business meeting of the South Carolina Chess Association [] held on March 22nd, [1967]...[o]ne proposal agreed to was the issuance of an official organization publication. It is hoped we can publish at least three issues a year and more if increased activity and interest warrants so doing. President Hyder appointed W. E. Houston of Columbia as editor." Following its first issue, W. Lee Hyder took over principal editorial duties for 31 consecutive issues until the fall of 1975. 1975 Vol. 10 No. 1 Edited by James Addison. Vol. 10 No. 2 Edited by Chuck Braun. Vol. 10 No. 3 through Vol. 11 No. 4 edited by Charles H. Walter. September and November 1977 issues edited by Stan Vaughan.
From the January 1978 issue of The Chessman: "The SCCA has signed an agreement with the GCA [Georgia Chess Association] to print and mail our Newsletter in THE CHESSMAN. So what does all of this mean? For you, the individual SCCA member, this will result in 6, not 4 newsletters a year." January 1978 Editor Ken Seagle. March 1978 Editor Bill Noyes. July and July Supplement Editor Jerry Grable. September 1978 Editor Mike Decker. All other issued edited by Earle Morrison.
From the first issue "[The] 'CHESSMAN' is gone. Just when it appeared that the magazine was assured of commercial success through access to the major Eastern states, publisher Morrison found it impossible to continue." "Two months of work was required to bring out the first issue of SOUTHEAST CHESS, resulting in a four month period of no local newsletter." Jointly edited by W. Lee Hyder (SC) with other Georgians.
From SCCA News Vol. 15 No. 1, "[r]esumption of publication of SCCA News was mandated by vote of the membership at the annual business meeting, as reported elsewhere in this issue. . . . Numbering and identification of the publication have not been consistent since 1976. Originally SCCA News was published in volumes that went from one annual meeting to the next. As we are resuming publication at the beginning of the calendar year, that will henceforth be the basis for volume numbers. As this is the fifteenth year of publication of a SCCA periodical, we are starting with Volume XV, Number 1, even though Volumes 12, 13, and 14 do not exist as such." Note also that the publication has non-sequential numbering, as Volume number 17 was skipped. Vol. 15 No. 1 through Vol. 18 No. 1 Edited by W. Lee Hyder. Vol. 18 No. 2 through Vol. 21 No. 1 Edited by John McCrary. Vol. 21 No. 2 through Vol. 22 No. 3 Edited by David Williams.
The SCCA news continued as Palmetto Chess beginning in 1988. Per SCCA News Vol. 22 No. 3 "[s]everal names were sent in to rename the SCCA NEWS. Among them S.C. CHESS, PALMETTO CHESS, PALMETTO PAWN-PUSHER, and the CAROLINA COUNTER-GAMBIT. The latter title suggests SOUTH OF THE BORDER." Volume numbering ceased after Vol. 23 and resumed with Vol. 31. Vol. 23 Nos. 1-2 Edited by David Williams. September 1988 through October 1989 issues Edited by John McCrary. January 1990 through Vol. 30 No. 2 Edited by M. Lee Hyder. Vol. 30 No. 4 through Vol. 32 No. 1 Edited by William Floyd. Vol. 32 No. 2 through Vol. 34 No. 4 Edited by Henry J. White. Based on testimony and archival copies of the SCCA website at scchess.org, no issues of any SCCA Newsletter have published since Palmetto Chess Vol. 34 No. 4 in November of 1999.
